An outbreak of fire at the Serrekunda Westfield branch of the Arab Gambian Islamic Bank Ltd caused a minor damage yesterday afternoon, a press release from the bank states. The release added that the Fire and Ambulance Service, who came to the scene, are investigating the cause of the fire.

In a statement the management of the bank described the fire as “minor” and assured customers that the incident is of no consequence on operations at the branch.

The fire reportedly started in the cubicle of a Cashier when the branch was closed for its usual mid-day break. It so happened that the security guards on duty noticed the fire and immediately set about putting it out with fire extinguishers before the Fire Service arrived. However the fire burnt a computer, a cashier’s chair, some paperwork and a limited amount of cash before it could be doused.

By 4:00 p.m. the fire was put out and regular service resumed at the branch.

The press release issued by management concludes with an assurance to customers, that the bank is “fully and comprehensively insured” and that their “assets are well secured.” No injury has been reported.
