President Wade Reconciles with Macky Sall

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

According to news monitored on the Senegalese state television, President Abdoulaye Wade last Friday reconciled with Macky Sall, the Speaker of the Senegalese Parliament, at the State house in Dakar. The reconciliation followed the intervention of Serign Bara Mbacke, the new Khalifa-General of the Mouride brotherhood.

The strained relations between the two statesmen follows a row caused by the Speaker’s decision last October to summon Karim Wade, the son of President Wade, the Chairman of the organising Committee of the 11th Islamic Summit Conference, to present an audit report and shed light on all expenses made by the committee.

This did not go down well with President Wade, who orchestrated his removal last November as number two of the ruling party PDS. In addition, his term of office was reduced from five years to one year.

Before the reconciliation last Friday, there was a reported plan by many PDS parliamentarians to remove him from office by passing a vote of no confidence but the vote did not materialise.

Now according to official sources, Speaker Sall has reconciled with all top party militants and President Wade to the effect that plans against him have been reversed.
