Keyboard layout specifies what character the computer will display when you will press the certain key on your keyboard. Using various keyboard layouts is a great way to save your time and type in a various languages, but don't waste your time typing the same twice or switching between layouts, learn this aspect carefully and use short keys suggested by Windows to be professional about keyboard layouts.
