Following the publication of an article captioned: Rubbish!!! come on KMC in Daily Observer, about an unauthorised dump site behind the Cooperative in New Jeshwang, the Cleansing Service Division of the Kanifing Municipal Council has embarked on a massive cleansing exercise on all illegal dump sites in the municipality.
Momodou Jallow, assistant manager of Cleansing Services at KMC, told the Daily Observer that they used to clear all dump-sites before the situation reaches a level that makes it difficult for them.
“The problem is that there are 45 unauthorised dump sites within the municipality. So we were cleaning other areas while others were dumping their rubbish here and other unauthorised dumpsite.
The council did not have enough big trucks to clear out such rubbish within few days. We do hire trucks from contractors to do the job” he explained.
He then confirmed that work has been going on since the last three days to clean the dumpsite. He added that after completing the exercise in New Jeshwang, they will proceed to the unauthorised Badala Highway Junction dump-site behind the Shell filling stations and the Kanifing cemetery dump-site around Jimpex.
Mr Jallow also revealed that for the past ten days, they have so far clean Neneh Walley dumpsite near the Independent stadium in Bakau, Saul Samba dumpsite behind Bakau primary school, Malang Fatty dumpsite near the Independent stadium in Bakau, one dumpsite behind greater Banjul Upper Basic School behind Govi around Ndow’s Comprehensive as well as the Kotu-Majai Silo dumpsite.
