Three wins in three matches see the Gambians ready to start preparing for the U-20 World showpiece in Canada this summer. The 2-0 victory in their Group A opener with Burkina Faso set on their way, and followed by a slim 1-0 win over the hosts Congo, was enough for them to grip a place in the Great White.
A significant achievement for the Gambians, Canada 2007 will be their first-ever trip to a FIFA U-20 World Cup. The current side is made up primarily of the same players who were crowned African Champions at U-17 level in 2005 and booked an historic place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru the same year. Hosts Congo beat Burkina Faso on Friday join Gambia at the finals in Canada. In African U-20 qualifying Group B, Nigeria and Zambia lead the standings with four and six points respectively. The top two finishers from Group B rounded out the four-team African field for Canada 2007.
Nigeria and Zambia joined up with already qualified Congo and Gambia on Saturday to book their places at the U-20 World Cup Canada 2007. On the final match of the African youth, Zambia routed Egypt 3-0, while Cameroon went out, despite beating the rivals Nigeria for a bit of pride by 2-0. Despite the day's results, Nigeria has beaten the finalists at the last FIFA U-20 World Cup in the Netherlands in 2005 and booked their place at the finals in Canada, by finishing second in the group and edging out Cameroon on goal difference. Rounding out the African fours-team in the Great White North is Zambia - first place finishers in Group B- and Gambia and Congo - the top two teams from Group A.
Though the four sides to reach Canada are already known and will have this summer's world finals on the brain, continental bragging rights are still on offer in Congo.
The semi-final stages will pit The Gambia v. Nigeria and Congo v Zambia on 30 January, with a grand final at a later date to decide the champion of the Mother Continent.
