Mr Malick Manneh, manager of the Jembeh Drum Factory Centre in Manjai kunda, Kanifing Municipality has explained the role of the local drum factory and its impact on the socio-economic development of The Gambia.
Mr Manneh, a professional Jembeh drum-maker and supplier to the Tourism Development Area (TDA) craft markets could not recall the exact year the factory was established as according to him, drum-making is an outstanding family practice. He said that a total of five workshops are in the factory, all of which are occupied by professionals who used to make 3-4 drums a day whenever they got enough contracts. He described the tourist season as the peak of their business unlike to off season.
Mr Mannah, however, complained about the lack of promoters for their business unlike their Senegalese counterparts, despite the fact that The Gambia has the best woodlots and wood carvers. He therefore appeals to the people to promote their business in the interest of arts development in The Gambia.
