The National Scorpions Fan Club, yesterday converged at the President’s International Award (PIA), to select its final list to the African Youth Championship finals, starting January 20, at Congo Brazzaville.
Speaking to the avid fans, shortly before the announcement of the keenly-awaited list, Mr Bai Cham, President of the Scorpions Fan Club said his club is very glad and grateful to be given a package by His Excellency, Dr Alhagi Yahya Jammeh, to cheer up the team in Congo.
He said the selection process was not an easy task for the club. “The selection process was the most difficult task we faced in the past days. Yet, we were able to select members, under the basis of participation and commitment to the club. We have to refer to the club’s attendance register to help us select the right people for the trip. We will call the list and if anyone has any objection, you are free to forward it to the floor for discussion.”
Cham also called on the members of club to always remember a day like this, hence stressed on continuous commitment and participation to the activities of the club.
After the announcement of the list, however, both selected and unselect members described the selection process as free and fair.
One Musa Joof, a member of the club who was unfortunate to make the final list, told Observer Sports that: “I am very much satisfied with the selection process and the criteria used despite, I am not selected. Though, we will not be at Congo in person spiritually, we will be with the club and the team”.
Joof advised his would-be-going colleagues to go as fans and prove their worth in Congo. “Let them know that they are going as ambassadors of The Gambia and I will urge them to conform themselves during the tournament”, he said.
For Alieu Gassama, only Almighty Allah can reward President Jammeh for his kind gesture towards Gambians. “We should all pray that Almighty Allah will continue to guide President Jammeh so that Gambians will continue to experience more and more developments in The Gambia,” he said glowingly.
The selected fans will be joined by other fans drawn from the various regions around the country and the renowned Kabakel Group, to cheer up the team in Congo, thanks to President Jammeh’s timely and benevolent intervention.
