Apua-Gambia Chapter, an Alliance for the purdent use of Antibiotics will be inaugurated today Thursday 18 January 2007 at the Centre for Innovation Against Malaria (CIAM) Conference Hall, Opposite the Independence Stadium at 9: am.
The chapter, an International Non-Governmental Organization founded in 1981 is with the mission of strengthening society’s defaces against infectious disease, by promoting appropriate anti-microbial access and use of controlling ant-imicrobial resistance on a world wide basis.
The chapter is established in over 50 countries and stands as the world’s leading global organisation that conducts applied anti-microbial resistance research, education, capacity building and advocacy at the global and grassroots levels. Its goal is to improve anti-microbial policy and clinical practice worldwide so as to preserve the power of these life-saving agents. It is also meant to reduce drug resistance and improve the effectiveness of treatment for acute bacterial diseases, tuberclusis, AIDS and malaria, respectively in the industrialised and the developed world.
Dr. Anibal Sosa, Director for International Programmes at APUA, who is currently visiting The Gambia said their conference aims to help and educate people in the globe, not only in The Gambia but also in other African countries like Zambia, South Africa, Senegal, Kenya and Nairobi, etc.
According to him, APUA is not here to compete any NGO, but to complete and develop some patterns that are not yet completed.
Mr Adama Sallah, APUA-Gambia interim Coordinator said that the formation of The Gambia Chapter of APUA is part of APUA’s plan to reach all parts of the globe, including places most vulnerable to antimicrobial abuse, noting that most dangerous infections are coming from different parts of the world.
