Gambia’s baby Scorpions stunned the home crowd in Brazzaville beating Congo with the last kick of the match.

The victory has given them automatic qualification to both the semi finals of the tournament and the finals of the World Youth Championship to be held in Canada from 30th June to 22nd July, 2007.

Striker Pa Landing Conateh’s long-range goal came in a game where most of the chances had fallen to Congo whose in-form striker, Fabrice Nguessi Ondama, made a number of attempts on goal in the second half.

Congo now face a tough game against Burkina Faso on Friday while The Gambia will just need a draw against Ivory Coast to be group winners.

The enthusiastic support provided by the crowd propelled the home team forward as Congo switched play from side to side with long passes.

Speaking after the match Gambia’s coach, Peter Bonu Johnson, said: “No I was not surprised by the goal, because we had our strategy and that was what we implemented. “Obviously when you are playing with the home team you have to be very cautious at the back. “We allowed them to run the ball in their own zone, but when they came into our zone we made sure it was not easy for them: we made it very tight.

”On their last game against Ivory Coast, Coach Bonu said that they would not take the match lightly and would go all out to collect the three points.

He appealed for Gambians to continue to pray for them as more difficult games are ahead. Congolese coach Eddy Hudanski hailed the Gambian team for putting up a good fight against his team.
