Introducing Mahmud Jeng, alias, Hearth Breaka

Sunday, November 4, 2007

Hearth Breaka is a promising young Gambian artist born in the metropolitan town of Farrafenni in the North Bank Region.

At a tender age, he demonstrated keen interest in reggae music, by singing in school, street corners, etc.
"I was really impressed with Maxi Priest. Whenever I listen to him I always have a feeling that I too have the potential to get many people listened to me" he told Gambia talents, a website based in the UK

In 1997, he started singing at local ceremonies in Farafenni. It wasn't a difficult task for him, because his parents are griots and they offered him all the encouragement he needed. With the assistance of a couple of friends he recorded a single, called money at a house studio in his town. This single had enabled him to storm the urban parts of the country. His first performance at the Buffer Zone was so impressive that he won a contract with the Gambia Family Planning Association, to produce short music video clips on HIV/AIDS.

In October 2005, he was invited by HI-TECH 2000 to take part in the country's first locally produced reggae compilation, Be yourself. In the compilation, he became the dominant artiste, with more than three tracks.

Surprisingly, the same song has become popular on some private radio stations in Dakar, Senegal. Heart Breaka's Manager is currently in the Senegalese capital to see how best they can market and control his products in Senegal. Heart Breaka, whose real name is Mahmud Jeng, is now working on his debut solo album.

According to him, he intends to invite great musicians like Coumba Gawlo to do some combinations with him.
