In their drive to inculcate all stakeholders into olympism, The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will be introducing Olympic Education in the school system.
The new development project which will run for two years at the experimental phase, will target basic schools with the Olympatrica Centre at Serrekunda East as the pilot school.
Confirming this to our reporter, Momodou Demba, Development Officer, Gambia National Olympic Committee, said the implementors of the project are the GNOC and the regional education office.
“GNOC will identify one resource person while the regional office will also come up with three resource persons, who will be trained by olympic experts. The regional office will then select fifty teachers from the targeted schools for a proper training process.
During the training, the participants will be exposed to areas such as history and philosophy and the structure of the Olympic Movement, Olympic Games, concept and objectives of the Olympatrica programme among other relevant topics,” he said.
According to Demba, the initiative will be extended to other schools should the experimental two-year project register success.
