The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in accordance with Section 35 and 38 of the Elections Decree of 1996 Decree No.78 on Friday 30th November 2007, concluded a month-long transfer and replacement of voting cards in each administrative area across the country.
According to reports from the electoral commission, 501 voting cards were replaced during a month-long exercise and 333 voters transferred their voting cards. T he transfer is conducted to enable Gambians to exercise their franchise in the forthcoming local government elections in January, 2008.
“In Banjul Administrative area, 63 voter’s cards were transferred and 122 replaced. In Kanifing Administrative Area, 126 voter’s cards were transferred and 174 replaced. In Brikama Administrative Area, 60 voter’s cards were transferred and 75 replaced.” “ In Kerewan Administrative Area, 32 voter’s cards were transferred and 45 voter’s cards were replaced. In Mansakonko Administrative Area, 4 voter’s cards were transfered and 29 replaced. In Janjanbureh Administrative Area, 36 voter’s cards were transferred and 37 voter’s cards replaced. In Basse Administrative Area, 12 voter’s cards were transferred and 19 replaced,” the IEC revealed.
The IEC further encouraged the public to check with the regional offices within their administrative area to confirm the state of their registration.
