Five parastatals’ boards inaugurated

Lamin Nyabally, Permanent Secretary at the Departments of State for Works, Constructions and Infrastructure (DOWSCI), yesterday, presided over the inauguration of five new board of directors of five public enterprises, at a ceremony held at the Department of State for Works, Construction and Infrastructure in Kanifing.

The public enterprises (parastatals) were the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA), Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Gambia Public Transport Cooperation (GPTC), Management Service Agency (MSA), and the Gambia International Airline (GIA).

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Nyabally, said the appointment of the Board of Directors of the respective parastatals was a clear testimony of the confidence and trust bestowed upon them.

He told the board members that they have a crucial role to play in the public service delivery system, adding that “human resources and capacity building forms an integral part of the development of a nation”.

He emphasised the need for innovation and creativity to meet the challenges in the process of globalsation. “The works departments will continue to support you and will urged you to work as a team. Do not feel shy to knock our doors for support,” he said. He urged the new Boards of Directors to be “pro-active, creative and innovative” to enable them achieve meaningful objectives.

Isatou Hydara, Chairperson of the GIA Board of Directors, pointed out that her institution suceeded the Gambia Airways, saying the GIA plays a crucial role in aviation industry, especially during the annual Hajj to the Holy City of Mecca.

She then assured the board that they will do their utmost to leave up to expectations. For his part, Mustapha Colley, Chairperson of the GPA Board of Directors, pointed out that every Gambian must be ready to serve in the best interest of their nation in various capacities.

Mr Colley acknowledged the crucial role his institution in economy activity of the country. He urged other board members to be effective in order to leave up to expectations. Others speakers at the ceremony included the Managing Directors of all the five public enterprises. Senior Officials at the Department of State for Works, Construction and Infrastructure also witnessed the ceremony.
