Central River Region, on Saturday, celebrated the 42nd Independence anniversary of The Gambia, at Jareng Village in the Niamina East District, Central River Region (CRR).
Delivering his speech, Governor Janneh, expounded on patriotism and the need for everyone to contribute effectively to national development.
He told the gathering that a nation cannot thrive in the absence of peace, security and social cohesion. He added that for the country to evolve as a democratic nation, “we must anchor all of these ideals into the democratic precepts, practice and principles that we have grown here over the years”.
He said The Gambia is blessed with people of rich and diverse cultural background, noting that in spite of such diversity, Gambians have a unique common bondage. “We celebrate and continue to nurture a society of a special type, underpinned by a delicately-knitted communal way of life, in which we respect each other’s views, identify one another and readily share what we have for the general welfare of all. This rests on the tenets of true patriotism that should be translated into civic responsibilities,” he urged.
Governor Janneh expressed optimism that the agricultural sector will continue to receive government’s priority.
He then commended Gambians for the success stories in the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
He then urged all Gambians and the people of CRR, in particular, to put aside the political affiliations and work in the interest of the nation.
The occasion was presided by Alhaji Amulai Janneh, Governor of CRR, while the Gambia Police Band and Armitage Scout Band led a match-past.
The ceremony was attended by the Nationa Assembly Member (NAM) for CRR, Seyfolu (chiefs), Alkalolu, and the people of the region.
