Students of senior secondary schools throughout The Gambia have started their final West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination last week.
In an interview with Top Class, Mr. Adolf W. Dzasmatu, Head of Mathematics and Science Department at Gambia Senior Secondary School (GSSS), said they have prepared the students to do what they are expected of during the examination. He said that all syllabuses have been revised and extra classes are also conducted. “We are aware of the fact that in the GSSS, our students are better and if they try hard they can make it,” he said.
According to him, he is teaching 75 (Seventy five) students who are doing physics in the science classes and there is hope that seven of the students will have A- 1 in this.” It is still not too late, and students should make more research and read extensively especially in the areas of mathematics and English language,” he advised.
Mr. Moses Beyai, Department of Modern Language at St. Augustine’s Senior Secondary School (St’ASSS), who also joined the list of teachers to reveal their students’ preparedness for the up-coming WASSCE said that they have taught the students everything that is required for them to know in the exams especially in areas were they become very weak.
He revealed that, when he started with the Grade 12 students during the first term, he was teaching them English language. “I tested them in section A in English language, where we discussed at length the topics, section B he said, which comprises of figures speech, grammatical structures, word replacement, and also Oral English and many others were all treated,” he said.
According to him, the performance of the students was excellent and most of them were able to get credits in the first term exams. “If they continue in that way, they will surely come out with excellent results in the WASSCE examinations,” he said. He then advised the students to work hard and continue with the struggle.
Baboucarr Chorr, a Grade 12 student of GSSS, said that he is prepared for the coming examination, noting that the serious students are now spending most of their time in the school library and other institutions reading and making research.
“My confidence is high. This is because our teachers, principal and vice principal always advise us to take our work and assignments seriously. We are well equipped to face the examination”, he said.
Sajor Sarr a student at Muslim Senior Secondary School said he is reading hard to pass the WASSCE. He explained that they have extra classes with teachers in their school after which he spend sometime reading at home.
According to him, he is 100% confident that he will make it in the examination because he has done the load of the reading. He advised his colleagues to work hard for the examination as there are no magical means in passing examinations.
For his part, Malick Sallah a student at St’ASSS, also expressed confidence that he will make it. He thanked his principal and teachers for their good work, noting that only God can reward them.
Mr. Mohamed Mansaray, History Department in GSSS also prayed for the success of the students in their examination and also advised them to study hard.
Bubacarr Darboe, a student at GSSS, said he is expecting to have A’s and B’s with the help of Allah as he is prepared for the exams. He commended the teachers and advised his colleagues to make the best use of the library.
