Abidjan Meeting set to Resolve WAFU Crisis

Eight member Countries of the West African Football Union (WAFU) met  in Abidjan last Saturday with the aim of solving the leadership crisis in the Sub-regional football body.

Football Associations officials from, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Togo, Gambia, Niger and Cote d’Ivoire at the end of the meeting released a final communiqué on the leadership crisis in the presence of Mr O.B Conateh, Vice President and Sekou Fofana a member of the executive committee.

According to the final communique delegates from the eight member countries present at the meeting demonstrated their will to maintain the long existing cohesion within WAFU and reaffirmed the necessity for all sub-regional and continental Associations to strictly respect the status of the Associations.

Delegates seized the occasion to congratulate WAFU President Jacques Anouma for his readiness to solve amicable the leadership crisis in WAFU which was demonstrated in the meeting held in Abidjan on April 14th  2007.

They also expressed their gratitude to the meeting held on May 5th 2007 in Zurich between CAF President Issa Hayatou and WAFU President Jacques Anouma and called on Mr Anouma to maintain the spirit for the quick resolution of the crisis.

They urged all member Associations to fully participate in up coming meetings and activities organised by the executive committee.

They thanked WAFU Sports Ministers for taking initiatives to intervene in the crisis and encourage them to continue the good move.

They appealed to Mr Anouma to convene a general assembly during the FIFA congress in Zurich as stated in the union status.

The meeting approved the proposed organisation of a sixteen nation tournament in Abidjan and May 31st has been set for dead line of registration.

They urged all member association to pay their dues before the General Assembly in Zurich.

The countries that were not present in Abidjan are: Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, Liberia, Mauritania, Mali, Senegal and Guinea Conakry.
