5 Chestnut Grove teachers arrive

A delegation of five teachers from Chestnut Grove School in the United Kingdom last Friday, May 25, landed at the Banjul International Airport for another visit to Banyaka Lower Basic School.

The five-teacher delegation led by Mary Holder comprises of Ellie Carding, Becky Nunn, both Geography teachers, Parneeta Davies, a Mathematics teacher, Adam Butcher, an Arts teacher. They were received by their Gambian friend, Mr. Alieu Jatta, who linked them with the school.

According to Mary Holder, during their week-long stay in The Gambia, they will be overseeing the implementation of solar panels in one of the new classroom built in the school by the Department of State for Education, The Gambia, as promised by Mr. Baboucarr Bouye, Permanent Secretary, Department of State for Basic Education back in the year 2005.

She added that they are also set to present another major educational boost to the school. “We are going to present a computer to the school and other educational materials that will greatly benefit the students,” she said.

Madam Holder further noted that they where also liaising with a charitable organisation, ‘pageant’ to sponsor six children at Banyaka Lower Basic School for period of one year. “All these funds provided for the schooling of the children where raised by the students and staff of Chestnut Grove School over a period of two years,” she pointed out.

Alieu Jatta, alias, Alex Jatta, who is their Gambian counterpart, expressed delight in receiving yet another delegation from the Chestnut Grove School. He recognised their numerous assistance and contribution Chestnut has made towards the education sector and then commended them for the love they have for the Gambia.

The delegation is expected to visit the school, tomorrow, Tuesday May 29. They will be staying in the country until Friday, June 1.
