League title race heats up

Thursday, June 14, 2007

It is not over until it is over! But Real de Banjul, the current league leaders on 31 points, will hope not to slip down in their remaining two fixtures against Ports Authority and Bakau United, if they want to clinch their first league title in over a decade.

The dethroned league champions, Wallidan, also remain favourites in the competitive final run as they currently trailed the leaders by only a lone point. The two sides fought a tooth-and-nail 1-1 draw match in their Week Sixteen fixture played at the Banjul Mini-stadium over the weekend.

The third position holders, Gambia Ports Authrity, who were held to a 0-0 draw by a struggling Sea View over the weekend, couldn’t be ruled out of the race either.
The relegation battle is also heating up with Bakau United struggling through thick and thin to avoid relegation with only two  vital fixtures left.

On Sunday, Sait Matty beat fellow strugglers, Bakau United, to better their position on the table, but salt was added to Steve Biko’s injuries after a grave 0-2 defeat to Hawks on the same day.
