Wallidan and Real in appeal tussle

Thursday, June 21, 2007

The Banjul giants and current leaders in the GFA First Division league table, Real de Banjul, have filed an appeal against arch rivals, Wallidan FC, for what they described as ‘fielding an ineligible player’ during their second round fixture which ended 1-1 at Banjul Mini-stadium, reports reaching Observer Sports desk have revealed.

Real de Banjul claimed their arch-rivals fielded in defender Momodou Lamin Sillah, when the three-match suspension handed down on him by the Disciplinary Committee of The Gambia Football Association was far from being expired.

The pending case, Observer Sports has learnt, is currently before the GFA Organising Committee who is set to make a ruling on the matter before the final weekend fixtures on Sunday, June 24.

“Yes, we have received an appeal letter from Real de Banjul concerning the matter and the Organising Committee will have a thorough look at the matter before coming up with a final decision in a few days time,” an anonymous member of the Organising Committee revealed to Observer Sports yesterday.

Real de Banjul, Gambia Ports Authority, Wallidan and Gamtel all remain in contention, to be crowned the league champions. Real de Banjul, however, hold a slim advantage over their three rivals; and should the pending case go in their favour, they would automatically be crowned the champions, despite having one-final match to play against Bakau United on Sunday.
