At Treason Trial, Defence Counsel Asks for Time Extension

Sunday, June 24, 2007

Lawyer Lamin Jobarteh, the defence counsel for Omar Faal (Keita) and Demba Dem, the 7th and 8th accused persons respectively, on 21st June 2007 requested the court for an extension of time to enable him file the address on behalf of his clients.

Counsel Jobarteh told the court before Justice Anin-Yeboah that with regard to the 7th and 8th accused persons, the 7th accused was led in evidence by counsel Borry Touray but added that the records went missing, making it difficult to write out the address. He stated that the Director of Public Prosecution helped him in his efforts and was able to get the records of the cross-examination but added that the records on the evidence-in-chief were yet to be found.

He therefore applied for the court to assist him with the records of the proceedings.

The Director of Public Prosecution, Emmanuel Fagbenle, stated that on order of the court, the prosecution had filed the address and served same on the counsel of 5th, 7th and 8th accused persons. He added that he had received the address of the 5th accused, Tamsir Jasseh, but did not receive the address on behalf of the 7th and 8th accused persons.

The judge, for her part, said that since it was a criminal matter, she would allow an extension of time until 25th June 2007, to allow the defence counsel to file his address.

The case was thus adjourned to 29th June 2007, for ruling.
