DoSYS & RA raises concern on proliferation of so-called churches

The Department of State for Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs has raised concern on the proliferation of so-called churches in the country, particularly, in the Greater Banjul Area. According to a press release from DoSYS&RA, the Department of State recognises the right for every person to freely practise any religion and to manifest such practice as enshrined in the constitution of The Gambia.  It also stated that it will therefore, not compromise with any individuals or group of individual, who hide behind religion to wreck havoc or create confusion in society.

“This Department of State, in collaboration with The Gambia Christian Council will not recognise the existence of any church or organisation that does not register with The Gambia Christian Council. We wish to emphasise that the religious tolerance and the cordial relations between Muslims and Christians that this peaceful country has witnessed over the years will not be compromised,” the release stated.

The Department of State for Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs further noted that in collaboration with The Gambia Christian Council, they will not hesitate to close down any church and/or organisation whose activities is not recognised by the Christian Council of The Gambia.

The Department of State for Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs then thanked the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council and The Gambia Christian Council for their steadfastness and close collaboration with this Department of State on all matters revolving around religion in this great nation of The Gambia.
