NMCP commends partners

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

Adam Jagne-Sonko, deputy programme manager of the National Malaria Control Prgramme (NMCP), has expressed the organisation’s profound gratitude to its partners. She commended them for immensely contributing to the success of the 2007 Malaria Control and Prevention Campaign in a view to reduce the malaria burden in the country.

She therefore enumerated their partners in development such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Department of State for Health (DoSH), Unicef, Catholic Relief Service (CRS), The Youth Association Against Malaria (TAYAM), the Global Fund, MRC and the Divisional Health Teams.

Speaking to the Daily Observer, Mrs Jagne-Sonko said key partners like the WHO and others have provided both technical and financial support, which she said led to the success of the bednet dipping and biolavicide spraying exercise.

She further thanked the people at community level, for actively participating in the malaria control and prevention campaign.

She advised pregnant women and children, considered to be the most vulnerable groups, to sleep under insecticide treated bednets in order to contain the development of the disease.

Mrs Jagne-Sonko added that it is against this background that the DoSH and its partners consequently came up with the Insecticide Treated Bednets (ITNs) strategy, as one of their key programme areas supported by their partners.

According to her, the recent campaign, conducted in Banjul and all the six health regions in the country and the re-treatment of conventional bednets, have registered significant success. Mrs Jagne-Sonko also thanked Gamcel and the media for playing a prominent role in the campaign.
