Gamtel/Gamcel Sale Illegal – NRP’s Dulloh Bah

africa » gambia
Monday, September 03, 2007

Dulloh Bah, the NRP Campaign Manager, has added his to the voices clamouring against the 50 per cent sale of the shares of Gamtel/Gamcel to Spectrum Group, saying that the transaction should be revoked for lack of legitimacy.

Speaking to this paper yesterday, Mr. Bah pointed out that the IMF-, World Bank-induced programme of privatisation of public corporations that the Gambia government purports to be implementing, as well as the National Audit Act that established the Gambia Public Procurement Authority, expressly states that all sales of public properties must be tendered both nationally and internationally. According to Mr. Bah, since this condition has never been met, the sale has thus been rendered illegal.

He said: “In this case the law was not respected. I am therefore advising the government and the buyer(s) of the 50 per cent shares of Gamtel/Gamcel to revoke the arrangement.

“I am also calling on all the opposition parties and all concerned Gambians both home and abroad to join my call for a legal action if the government fails to revoke the sales,” he remarked.
