The National Youth Parliament (NYP), based on its vision of a better Gambia for all, has diversified its areas of intervention to areas such as democracy, human rights and good governance. The NYP with the intention, of ensuring effective and efficient youth participation in the political dispensation of the country, decided to be involved in empowering young people to realized their rights and responsibilities as far as issues of democracy and good governance are concerned. For the forthcoming local government elections the National Youth Parliament will embark on two key programmes voter education and the observation of the electoral process.
In view of the above, the youth parliament last Friday convened a press conference at its secretariat in Kanifing. According to the speaker of the National Youth Parliament Hon. Lamin F. Bojang, on the voter education they are targeting at least 20,000 eligible youth voters in 23 senior schools.
The program he said is being limited to only four administrative areas namely Banjul, Kanifing, Brikama and Kerewan due to lack of funds for a vigorous and intensive voter education campaign nation wide. Despite these constraints, the National Youth Parliament is very much committed to its mission, vision and purpose of establishment in serving as the voice of young people.
Ousman Conateh clerk for Banjul Youth Parliament chaired the occasion while Hon. Maimuna Sarr Deputy Speaker NYP gave the vote of thanks.
