Beggars Ordered to Desist from Street Begging, As Five got Deported

Friday, October 17, 2008

Eleven beggars were recently arraigned at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court charged with nuisance and obstruction of the public highway.

The five non-Gambians among them were additionally charged with entering into the country without pass or permit.

In passing his judgement, Presiding Magistrate Lamin George stated that he recognizes the beggars as part of the society, but noted that the way and manner some of them are conducting themselves is very bad and unacceptable.

He therefore ordered that the non-Gambian beggars be deported immediately to their native countries and warned the Gambians among them to desist from street begging.
