Let’s Address Soaring Air Fares

Monday, October 27, 2008
It is veritable that travelling from The Gambia by air is increasingly becoming a problem to many in this country. Affordability to travel to other parts of the world by air from The Gambia, has now become a major concern in all corners of our society, especially in current times as many complain of the high price of air tickets. It has also become a topical issue in all corners of the country.

Concerns have been raised by the general public regarding the high cost of air tickets not only within the sub region but also to some parts of the world. It is now becoming customary to many as they now travel out of the country by land just to go and buy an air ticket to other countries where it is seen to be cheaper so as to be able to get to their destination.

There is no denying that this is making life extremely difficult for many and we are saying something should be done to address what many describe as an unfortunate situation.

There is need for the authorities especially The Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to review their policies and look into possible ways of ensuring a reduction in the taxes levied on aircrafts landing at the Banjul International Airport and also the charges on air ticketsso as to enable passengers travel easily.

The Gambia, being a good destination, should allow more airlines to come into the country to facilitate the movement of people to other parts of the globe. We are in a world of competition and should thus encourage more and more airline companies to come to The Gambia. Every now and then, we see people travel to neighbouring countries by land before finally boarding flights to their destination. This is creating more hardship for travellers, who in most cases lost their baggage or even miss their connecting flights.

Government should also be seen to be encouraging experienced Gambians in the field of airline operations, travel agencies so as to make the business more lucrative.

We reiterate that every effort should be employed in putting our aviation industry in good position with all possible haste.
