FROGS Assist More Schools in The Gambia

Friends of Gambian Schools FROGS- a British Charity in The Gambia has just completed two more projects in the country.

Two Schools – Kerr Sett Saloum LBS and Wijnand Nursery School are the latest to benefit from FROGS assistance.

Wijnand NS was a very tiny Nursery School in Talinding. It was overcrowded until FROGS moved in and built another classroom to ease the situation. It is now far less crowded with the new addition and FROGS took the opportunity to adorn the walls with educational posters and other useful decorations that will assist the students in their studies.

FROGS also provided benches, tables and cupboards to furnish the new classroom, and placed transparent panels into the roof to give more light to the classrooms. They also repaired the walls in the first classroom and provided a new blackboard, cupboard, doors and windows.

The Headmaster, Mr. Abdou Jassey, expressed his delight at the school’s transformation.  He was equally delighted when a visitor accompanying Mrs. Sally Reader, the FROGS co-ordinator, supplied some of the less fortunate students with new uniforms.

The second school, Kerr Sett Saloum LBS, which is located in the provinces close to Kuntuar, needed a new library. Seeing this the US Peace Corps, headed by Mr. Jim Hedgecock appealed to FROGS for help.  With the Peace Corps leading the way and FROGS providing the materials, area volunteers will convert an abandoned shop into a brand new library for the school.  The new library will provide an excellent resource for the students as well as an environment in which literacy can prosper.

Visiting the library recently, Sally and Malcolm Reader, FROGS co-ordinators in The Gambia, were very pleased with the outcome of the development.

Funding for all FROGS projects is carried out by the FROGS Committee in the UK. FROGS is already planning their projects for 2008 – all Educational Regions in The Gambia will receive assistance says FROGS officials.
