NYC endorses local govt elections

The National Youth Council NYC following their active participation as election observers in the just ended Local Government Elections in their preliminary report said the elections was free, fair, transparent and free from fear.

At a press briefing on Thursday , Alhagie Kebbeh NYC chairperson said his council members deployed six election observers in the constituencies of Bakau,Serrekunda West and S/Kunda East. He added that their observations were centred on the opening of the polls, voting process, closing of polls and the counting process.

The teams according to the NYC boss commended the IEC  polling staff for a job well done.

He added that the voting process of the elections was generally peaceful and accessible.

On the closing of the polls, Kebbeh went on, ‘“most of the polling stations were closed at 4;00pm. Drums were immediately sealed and seal numbers were recorded by the presiding officers and party agents.According to him, the team also observed that the counting process was properly done and most counting centres were spacious” he said.

“All the counting steps were properly followed,results recorded and signed by party agents.Voter turn-out was generally low especially within the Greater Banjul Area”. He then emphasized the need for continues voter education programmes.
