Professor Raja Aghzhadi, a renown Moroccan surgeon, is currently in The Gambia to raise awarness about the devastating effects of breast cancer to women. After having participated actively in the campaign to combat one of the worst form of cancer in countries like Mali, Niger and Ghana, she decided to share her expertise with Gambian medical practictioners.

In an interview with the Daily Observer she indicated that it was only with an increased awareness that the survival rate for those stricken with breast cancer could be improved. ‘‘We all have to do what we can to stop this trend and protect the ones we love from this deadly killer,’’ she added with determination.

Considering that death rate, due to breast cancer, is going crescendo, she called on policy makers, opinion leaders and women organisations to remain vigilant at all times and to take action before being victims of breast cancer.

For the founder of Cœur de Femme, a Moroccan NGO leading the battle against breast cancer, the interactive session she had last Friday with the medical personnel of the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) would certainly open optimistic perspectives for women living with breast cancer.

She expressed hope to explore new avenues with her Gambian counterparts. She then concluded by taking the opportunity to thank Ambassador Ousman Badjie, who has been instrumental in facilitating her visit to the Gambia.
