Alhaji Sillah, head coach of the GFA Division One giants, Gamtel FC, has revealed that some players in the Scorpions squad that drew against Mauritania on Saturday, should not have earned a called-up into the team.
The Former Scorpions head coach said National team selection should be based on merit and not otherwise, noting that some teams - Bakau United to be precise, continue to struggle in league yet their players are being selected in the National team.
The outspoken coach was on Saturday quoted as saying that: “Bakau United have been struggling in the league for the past years because of defensive problem. So why should Bakau United defenders be selected. National team selection should be based on merit.”
Coach Sillah was reported to have made similar comments after the final selection of Gambia’s Zone II team to Guinea Bissau was unveiled.
And an anylist who spoke to Observer Sports under the condition of anonymity said, coach Sillah is making such a green-eyed statement because no Gamtel player was selected in the team.
“I don’t expect a coach of Alhaji Sillah’s calibre to make such a flimsy statement just because players of his choice were not selected,”
“Sait Matty, Interior, Samger and Sea View never had a single player selected from their respective clubs, yet they never complain,” he said.
