KMT says China shows flexibility

Tuesday, April 15, 2008
Reports reaching the Daily Observer revealed that the Kuomintang (KMT), Taiwanese ruling party, is saying that China has shown flexibility in the recent meeting between Taiwan's vice president-elect and China's president.

Following a meeting between Taiwan's Vincent Siew and China's President Hu Jintao, China's commerce ministry sent a press release that said cross-strait talks could begin under the principle of One China. When it found that the principle was not mentioned, it deleted the phrase about One China, less than two hours later.

The KMT says this move shows China's goodwill. They also said it proves there was a consensus in a 1992 meeting, that the two sides could have their own interpretations of One China. The ruling party denies there was such an agreement. The One China issue lies at the center of Taiwan and China's political disputes.

It could be recalled that Siew received VIP treatment from Chinese officials during the Boao Forum. A symbolic gesture described by many observers as China’s goodwill to talk to Taiwan.

Vincent Siew said he was satisfied with the treatment he received, saying the meeting has melted the ice between the two sides. Siew described the talk with Hu as "candid and friendly." He also said he believed the meeting had produced results.
