Graduates should venture into vocational training - PS Njie

Mambanyich Njie, Permanent Secretary at the Department of State for Youth and Sports, has said that there is a great need for school graduates notably from Senior Secondary Schools to venture into vocationnal training.

In an interview with newsmen at the Joint Officers’ Mess on Monday, PS Mambanyich Njie said vocationnal training is necessary, as it develops self-reliance attitude amongst the youth. “We have seen countries such as Nigeria where graduates take up skill ventures at their National Youth Service Corps.  Nigeria is far bigger than the Gambia. So if they succeeded in mobilising there graduates to take part acquire the necessary skills,  why can’t we  do the same in The Gambia,” he questioned.

In PS Njie’s view the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS) of the Gambia needs to change their strategy in terms of operation and expand their services by including fresh school graduates.

He suggested that this can be done by sensitizing and selling the idea to the general public that the NYSS doesn’t belong to only school drop outs or the less privileged.
