Monday, June 9, 2008

Reports reaching The Point have revealed that a woman was chopped to death last Thursday with a cutlass in the village of Berending, North Bank Region.

When this reporter visited Barra last Thursday he found a large crowd of apparently traumatised people at Barra Police Station.

When contacted, the police Public Relations Officer Inspector Sulayman Secka confirmed the story.

According to him, it all happened on Thursday, 5th June 2008 at Berending between the hours of 2pm and 2:30pm. He said that on this fateful day a suspect, Morro Demba, said to be an adult, charged into a compound where he found an old woman. Upon entering the compound with a cutlass, he was said to be shouting, “I will kill you.” As a result the woman said to be 65 years old ran into her house for safety but the accused followed her there. He then reportedly hacked the woman all over her body with the cutlass, killing her. “Even her brain was coming out,” said the police spokesperson.

The body of the deceased was taken to RVTH for post mortem while the accused is in the police custody.

The police spokesperson further revealed that the police were in possession of all the evidence, adding that after received the post mortem report from RVTH, the suspect would be charged.

Meanwhile, at Barra some people were quoted saying that the accused was mentally ill while others maintained that nothing was wrong with him. When asked about the suspect’s mental state, PRO Secka said he received no complaints about his health status.

At the end of the police investigation however, it will become clear whether the perpetrator of this tragic act was well or not.
