Jarju scores first brace for Mons

Gambia international Mustapha “Toubabo” Jarju came off the bench to score twice as RAEC Mons beat FC Bruges 2-1 in a preseason friendly on Wednesday.

Watched by a sizable crowd the two teams showcased some of their new signings expected to dazzle the Belgian first division when the new season starts in August.

The first half was goalless but things changed once Toubabo was introduced into the game in the 46th minute.

It took the prolific midfielder only 4 minutes to unlock the FC Bruges defence and give Mons, nicknamed the ‘Dragons’, the lead.

The Dragons’ advantage lasted only 10 minutes, however, as Bruges struck back in the 60th minute from the penalty spot – Ivan Lenko stepping up to beat shot-stopper Herpoel from 11 metres out.

But the day was to belong to Toubabo, who has had an impressive scoring record since moving to Belgium two years ago.

With 5 minutes remaining, the Dragons’ first signing of the new season scored his second goal of the night to give Mons a morale-boosting win over their first division opponents.

It’s Toubabo’s third goal in two warm up games for Mons. He also came off the bench last week to score in a 9-0 crushing of lowly Soignies, which plays in a league five levels below the Dragons. Up next for Toubabo and team mates is a weekend trip to France for another preseason friendly against Racing Club de Lens.  Culled from gambiasports.gm
