Sukuta Alkalo Calls on Villagers to Maintain Culture and Traditions

Monday, September 15, 2008
The Alkalo of Sukuta Village in Kombo North, Alhagie Momodou Cham, has called on the public to maintain culture and traditions.

Speaking at his tribunal in Sukuta recently, while presiding over the case involving two brothers, the Alkalo spoke about the importance of culture and traditions in our society. He said that in the days when tradition and culture were abundant in their fullest form people settled disputes at family level, ward level or at the tribunal of the village leader. “This was why we lived happily together with united resources,” he said.

Alkalo Cham further stated that there used to be four Kalbilos (wards) but now there are 13 different wards. “What I want you to understand is that this is still the same Sukuta with the same people. Youngsters must respect their elders and elders must have mercy on the youngsters,” he told those gathered. This, according to Cham, is what we find in our cultures and traditions.

Alkalo Cham finally commended the Bakoteh Police Station for the role they play in maintaining peace by using cultural and traditional methods of settling disputes especially in the case of children lodging complaints which are then referred back to the community heads to be resolved.
