Following the expulsion of Dawda Manneh, the erstwhile National Assembly Member for Nianija constituency, from the APRC party, thus disqualifying him from membership of the National Assembly, the Independent Electoral Commission has announced a date for the conduct of a by-election in that constituency.  

A press release sent by the Commission states that having been formally informed about the said vacant seat by the clerk of the National Assembly, it has decided to go ahead with the conduct of the by-election, which it said is in accordance with "Section 91 subsection 1 (d) and subsection 3 of the 1997 Constitution of The Republic of The Gambia". It went on to set Thursday 18th December, 2008, as the date for the election.
