Friday, September 26, 2008
At the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra on Sunday, September 28, Ghana ’s Black Satellites will welcome the Young Scorpions of The Gambia in the first leg clash of the final round of the qualifying rounds for the 16th African Youth Championship, Rwanda 2009.

The clash dubbed “battle of winners” will seek to analyse the strength of the Gambians who have set their sights on a successful defence.

The Gambia had a bye from the preliminaries but reached this far by disposing off Mauritania 5-2 on aggregate whilst Ghana brushed past Angola with similar aggregate.

In other matches, holders Congo will face their biggest test in the build up to the defence of their title away in Yaoundé, as guests of Cameroon.

Cameroon, winners in 1995 are hoping to improve on their unimpressive campaign during the last edition two years ago, where they were bundled out after the first round after placing bottom of their group, and have sworn to go all out for a convincing result to make the second a mere formality.

Three-time winners Egypt are favoured as they welcome the Young Chipolopolo of Zambia to Alexandria .
Nevertheless, Zambia coach Oswald Mutapa Jnr says the Egyptians are a beatable side despite their status as a highly reputed side in African football.

In Gaborone , South African trainer Serame Letsoaka will be hoping to restore the smiles back on the faces of local football fans against Botswana after their juniors, Amajimbos (U-17 side) were bundled out of the qualifying rounds of the African U-17 Championship by Malawi a fortnight ago.

Letsoaka’s team produced the biggest win of the first round, an 8-2 drubbing of Reunion Islands and can’t afford to disappoint this time.

Ivory Coast battle West African rivals, Burkina Faso in Abidjan while the Eaglets of Mali treks Cotonou as guest of the Young Squirrels of Benin. The five-time winners Nigeria sort things out with Sudan at home.

The return leg matches have been fixed for the weekend of October 10 and 12, with the winners joining hosts Rwanda for the final championship slated for next year.
