It is a great privilege for The Gambia to be chosen to host the Commonwealth Games General Assembly. This is an illustration that our country constitutes an important pillar in building bridges between nations.
In receiving the Commonwealth Executives at State House, President Jammeh has outlined the role that sports continue to play in ensuring peace and stability among nations.
For us, it is a real reason to celebrate, as people are coming to The Gambia not only to see how The Gambia is governed, but how Africa is as well. The Gambia Government, in collaboration with the country’s national Olympic committee, has already put in place the necessary measures to make this event a success.
This also shows the Gambian leader’s commitment to the ideals of peace as enshrined in the Olympic Charter. This international event which has brought together delegates from 71 countries will provide a platform for the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to hold its annual assembly.
As a tourist destination, The Gambia has a wonderful opportunity to promote itself. All indications are that our country will live up to expectations in tackling the challenges involved in hosting an event of this nature.
