Thursday, April 2, 2009

Alhusen Trawally is winner of the first ever Karate promotional competition organised by the Busumbala Karate Club, at the Busumbala village in Western Region.

In a competition attended by the residents of the village and surrounding areas, Trawally, who is a member of the SKI national team and an assistant instructor of the club, clinched first position in both the Kumite and Kata techniques and was awarded certificates alongside other winners.

37 Athletes participated in the competition which was divided into two main categories Kata and Kumite, from brown belts to white belts and the junior category respectively.

The Alkalo of the village, Mrs. Fatou Sowe Dumbuya, during the opening ceremony of the event, commended participants and the organizer of the promotional championship. She pointed out that sports should not be only be limited to the Kombos but should be spread to the whole national for national development in line with what the President of The Gambia preaches.

She further appealed to the president of the SKI to at least hold one competition in her village to revive the dormant club in her village. She promised that she will support the spread of Karate at her own level, particularly in her village. “I am happy to see young girls taking part in such a sport,” she concluded.

The President of The Gambia SKI, Sensei Muhammed Kaba Musa, thanked participants and their instructors for organizing this competition in line with the association’s requirements. He promised that this will not stop here but shall continue up to Basse. As it’s his duty as the president of the association to make sure that the techniques of SKI reach every corner of The Gambia and not only stop there but produce teams that will go and win medals at international competitions.

The technical director, Sensei Muhammed Danso, advised participants to attend technical courses organized by the SKI Association. This, he believes, is the only way they can update themselves on the latest competition rules as there are some changes made to the refereeing recently by WKF in the World Karate Competition held in Japan.
