The Gambia Armed Forces Football Club will leave Banjul today for Guinea Conakry, where they participate in the forthcoming West Africa Liaison Office (WALO) football championship.

The tournament, which is fixed between April 1 and April 15 in the former French colony, will gather 8 nations to compete for the coveted title, which is currently under the belt of the Gambian soldiers who won last edition held in Banjul in 2007. The other participating nations are Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Mali and Burkina Faso and hosts Guinea.

The Gambian team see the Conakry event as the best avenue where they can repaint their image after a disappointing showing at the 7th  African Military Football Cup (CAMFOOT) held in  Kampala, Uganda in December last year. If Armed Forces’ present form in the ongoing GFA First Division League is anything to go by, the team can surely retain the title come April 15 when the  two-weeks championship will wrap up.

Armed Forces are presently leading the GFA league table with six points clear at the top of the table following their deserved 1-0 victory over Real De Banjul in the ultimate match of the first round fixtures in the weekend.
