A dramatic scene unfolded in the early hours of last Tuesday when a group of people in New Jeshwang, on their way to the St Therese’s Church in Kanifing were attacked by unknown individuals.
This incident, according to the victims, took place between the New Jeshwang Mosque and Jokor Night Club. The victims added that the bandits stabbed them with knives and snatched their mobile phones and other belongings. The Daily Observer visited the victims in their homes and spoke to them about this incident.
Albert Ozuzu, a Nigerian, aged 52 and a resident of New Jeshwang, said while he was on his way to St Therese's Church around 6:00am, a group of bandits attacked him. "They knocked me down onto the ground, stabbed me on my head with a knife and took my wallet, which contained some money," he narrated.
Ozuzu further revealed that he has been living in The Gambia for 25 years but had never before been attacked by bandits. He called on the police to continue their night patrols and get rid of the bandits who terrorise the streets at that time of the night. Vincent Sambou, aged 35, another victim and resident of New Jeshwang, also narrated her ordeal.
According to her, she was attacked by four men, who were in possession of knives, hammers, etc. "We were four girls in number and the bandits attacked us. My colleagues ran away but I fought with them and they stole my mobile phone and a few things that were in my small bag. They stabbed me with a knife on my right hand. I shouted and a soldier, who was on his way to work, came to my aid and the boys ran away. It was that soldier who assisted me to get my bag," she disclosed.
Both victims were rushed to the Jammeh Foundation for Peace Hospital in Bundung for treatment.
