Chief of Kombo South Optimistic about Rural ElectrificationThursday, March 19, 2009
Alhagie Sheriff Ajay Janneh, chief of Kombo South has expressed high optimism about the success of rural electrification in his district. Speaking to The Point in an exclusive interview, chief Janneh said that the rural electrification programme in Kombo South has transformed the lives of many residents adding that a good number of youths in his district are now engaged in skilled jobs, thanks to the introduction of electricity in the area. He said with great exhilaration, “I think it worth celebrating this sudden advancement in the district. Many youths are now working as carpenters, welders, plumbers, and much more using electricity as a source of power for productive enterprises. The programme is really helping the people to be independent and not depend on others for their subsistence, welfare and progress.” According to chief Janneh, Kombo South produces about 90 percent of The Gambia’s commercial and industrial fisheries, and that therefore having electricity in Kombo South is a good initiative from the government. “Kombo South alone accounts for about 90 percent of The Gambia’s fishing industry, so having electricity in this area is a welcome initiative. This will help the fishermen to produce more fish and make it accessible to the ordinary Gambian. Greater electricity supply will facilitate storage for a longer duration of time,” Chief Janneh maintained. He however appealed to residents for attitudinal change in their lifestyles and to work generally. He underscored that this country can never be developed without the larger society’s involvement.
