At the end of the three-day training workshop for court reporters, organised by the Media Agenda and funded by UNESCO/NATCOM and held at the office of the Gambia Press Union, journalists from both the print and electronic media have recommended the establishment of a court reporters association.
This, they said, would oversee matters relating to court reporting by media houses in the country in order to help ensure the publication of accurate, balanced and factual reports from the courts. Meanwhile, a task force committee consisting of six members and headed by Modou Jonga of Foroyaa Newspaper was formed to draft a constitution and also to call up regular meetings that will discuss and ensure the establishment of the association.
Mr Madi MK Ceesay, director of Media Agenda, observed that the association will play a vital role in addressing issues of court reporting by the media houses in the country. According to him, the trainings that they have conducted with other groups on other reporting areas have all resulted in the formation of associations.
