Foundation for Disable People the Gambia (FFDP), whose welfare is to work and help the disabled in the Gambia on Tuesday donated wheel chairs produced by the Foundation Farm Bicycle Trawler to Kanilia Farms, and some educational materials to several schools within the Greater Banjul Area.

The donated materials were secured thanks to the support of the US Embassy in Banjul through its “Ambassador self help project”.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the foundation’s head office in Banjul, Mr. Gabriel Kenny Opesan Chief Executive Officer of the foundation revealed that FFDP started production of wheel chairs since 2003. He added that up to date, the foundation has produced over 150 wheel chairs locally.

Mobility, the FFDP boss went on, has been the only means of contributing to social development of oneself. He urged government to do everything possible within its means and resources so that every individual can contribute towards national development.

According to him, U.S. government has given the Foundation D190, 000 to embark on these projects, noting that the support will go a long way in ameliorating the weakness of the people with disability in having access to mobility and skill training.

He also informed the gathering that the foundation will change its current name to Foundation for Disabled People International as they are in the process of opening offices in Nigeria, U.K. and Sierra Leone while Gambia will remain the headquarters.

Mr. Kenny extended gratitude to the U.S. ambassador in the Gambia, Barry Wells for his continuous support.

For his part, Gabu Jarju, representative of the Director of Social Welfare commended the Foundation for a job well done.
