FJC receives Rotary Int’l top official

The speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay, yesterday received at her office Raphael Fiaty, district governor of Rotary International D9100 from Togo, accompanied by  top officials of rotary clubs of Banjul and Fajara, at her office at the National Assembly, Banjul.

The 12 top officials visit concided with the celebration of the Rotary International 104 anniversary, a day declared ‘world day of peace and understanding’. Receiving the delegation, Speaker Jahumpa-Ceesay expressed delight at the visit. She briefed DG Fiaty and delegation of certain informations about the National Assembly saying “the membership from both the oppoistion and the ruling party which has the majority. We also have standing committees as well as belonging to other international bodies such as the Commonwealth, the Pan-African and Ecowas parliament. We also have a harmoneous relations with the executive and also work closely with stakeholders” she said.

She then mentioned one of the most vibrant committee in the National Assembly-the Public Accounts Commitee, which is constitutionally mandated to scrutinise the accounts of all 55 government agencies and enterprises, to know how they spend government monies. This she added, shows how independent the National Assembly is, as a legislative body. She also informed him of the US$ 10M state of the art assembly building in the offing.

Speaker Jahumpa-Ceesay then highlighted the significant role President Jammeh has been rendering to the Rotary Clubs in The Gambia. “President Jammeh has been punping huge amounts of monies to both the Rotary Club of Fajara and Banjul. This is for the fact that, Rotary iternational has projects that are dedicated for community assistance in the fields of education health and agriculture” she said. She on behalf of the Gambian leader, thanked Rotary International through the Rotary Club of Fajara and Banjul, for their services to the Gambian people and assure them of her office’s continues collaboration.

For his part, Raphael Fiaty, district governor of Rotary International D9100 thanked Speaker Jahumpa-Cesay for the audience. He highlighted the numerous assistance the Gambian leader has been rendering to the Rotary Clubs of Banjul and Fajara. He acknowledged the commitment of President Jammeh and assured that they will continue to implement projects that are benefit to the Gambian people.

On his visit to The Gambia, he said, it is a duty for them as top officials to go round countries to see the progresses registered by the various clubs on their various projects. He said “I am so far impressed with the clubs in The Gambia and after my visit, I will confirm my opinion” he said. According to him, as part of their annual activities, their theme this year is ‘make the dreams real’, to stand firm to reduce infant child mortality so as to make the dreams of our children through. At the end of the ceremony, Mr Fiaty decorated Speaker Jahumpa-Ceesay with the designed Korean pin that shows the theme of the year ‘make the dreams real’.
