The Gambian team were returning from the former French colony, where they took part in the Zone II under-18 handball championship, which was eventually won by Senegal after beating Guinea 25-24 in the finals, played at the sports pavilion of Modibo Kéita Stadium in Bamako on Tuesday.
The Gambian team lost to the hosts Mali 34-26 in the third place play-off. Mali and Guinea completed the group phase with six points each but Guinea had a better goal difference. The Malians also added to the bronze medal, the best goalkeeper and best referee trophies. The tournament's best player trophy went to Senegalese winger Mamadou Thioye, the scorer of Senegal's victorious goal against Guinea.
