Gambia - no problem!

Editor,

It is with deep regret that I write in response to Sulayman Samba Jobe’s letter. In all my years of growing up and living in The Gambia, I have never known strife or hate. Gambia is peaceful to the extent that even when other countries are busy slaughtering their people, we go on saying: "Gambia - no problem!"

It is divisive to entertain the notion that Gambia (as small as it is) should now begin to construct a 'them' and 'us' society. Our sense of community should by all means supersede our need to conquer others. When we do not share or feel the emotions others feel and only focus on money, it is easy to see why Mr Capitalist himself is eager to create an 'us' and 'them' society. I believe my capitalist friend thinks that his education is sufficient reason for him to bandy selfish concepts about.

Please, let peace and love continue to prevail in our beloved country at all times. None of us is God, but God alone is there for all of us, whether Fula or Jola, Wollof or Creole or no tribe at all. We are people first and then proud Gambians. So let's not forget to treat people as fellow humans because that's the way we would like to be treated should we find ourselves in Basse, Banjul or anywhere else in the world.

Nana might be my sister but I would speak up for her in as much as I would speak out for anyone else who is being victimized. He is not promoting Gambian enterprise by bashing Gambian business. So why is he doing it? Since when was it permissible or decent to attack anyone whose surname is not 'Jobe'?
