Gambia U-17 Secure Impressive Victory In UK

Thursday, October 15, 2009

The rejuvenated Gambia National U-17 team that endured some frustration in the ongoing training camp in the United Kingdom in their final preparatory effort, ahead of the world’s most prestigious junior championship, scheduled to take place in Nigeria in two weeks time, had secured their most impressive victory since leaving the country, a fortnight ago for a three-week intensive training camp.

The two time Africa U-17 champions started the U.K training camp, with two heavy defeats to America U-17 team that is currently in the United Kingdom for their final preparation in the build-up to the FIFA U-17 World Cup finals.

But if their recent two impressive wins in a row is anything to go by, there is a possibility that they will make an impact in their bid to continue raising the Gambian flag to the higher heights when they travel to the Federal Republic of Nigeria where they will make their second FIFA U-17 World Cup appearances.

The darling U-17 side that is without the services of as many as 11 key players from the previous U-17 team that won their second Africa U-17 championship title in Algeria on Monday entertained Charlton Academy to an impressive Five-nil win which confirmed their third victories in a row.

Reports reaching Pointsport’s desk from the football association has it that the U-17 has succeeded in recovering from their two disappointing starts to the U.K training camp by beating Charlton Academy, thanks to goals from Babucarr Savage of Armed Forces in the GFA first division, Sea View Captain Pateh Nyang, Buba Sama, Ebrima Bojang who has recently put pen to paper on a 4-year St Etienne’s contract in the French top flight football and his strike-partner, Buba [Melez] Jallow who has already established himself as a regular scorer since joining the team a few months ago.

The current Africa U-17champions, headed by Tarik Siagy  that is expected to play its final warm-up match later today will return home tomorrow before proceeding to Nigeria, where the big event is scheduled to take place from October 24th- November 14th 2009.
