Ghana too strong for Senegal

Monday, December 1, 2008
Ghana opened their WAFU U-20 Championship account with a 2-0 win over Senegal on Saturday at the Jay Jay Okocha Stadium in Ogwashi-ukwu in Nigeria’s Delta State.

The Satellites scored a goal in each half to grab their first three points and they now claimed the summit of the Group B, after the other group match between Gambia and Guinea ended in goalless draw on the same day.

The Ghanaians are using the Nigeria tournament as part of their preparations for next year’s African Youth Championship which has been slated for Rwanda in January.

Ghana coach, Sellas Tetteh, could not hide his delight after fetching the maximum points against the tough Senegalese side saying “It’s a good start for us we hope to improve on our performance as the tournament progresses.”

“We are using the WAFU competition to better prepare for the Rwanda finals. But that does not mean we don’t want the trophy. We want it as much as other teams need it and definitely we are going for it,” he said.

Ghana will return to action today Monday, December 1, with a match against Guinea who would a need point keep alive their dream of reaching the last eight of the two-week event.
