In its relentless effort and commitment to the development and empowerment of young people in The Gambia, Global Unification, The Gambia (GU) through its Children Welfare domain, and its 2009 action plan, is organising an inter-schools quiz and debate on environment, entitled: ‘School Challenge’.
The aim of this program is to create general awareness, among young people, students in particular, on the topical issues of environmental concerns. According to Ms Agboola Deborah, the association’s children welfare co-ordinator, the program is expected to take place in March 2009 and will bring together more than 40 students from 10 senior schools in Greater Banjul Area and Western Region, to compete, learn, discuss and share their ideas about the environment. "Through this program, we hope to test students’ understanding, as well as put them in the forefront of discussions regarding the future of the environment in the country." she said.
Ebrima S. Dem, the national representative of the association. said environment issues are topical and are part of the most pressing global concerns, as it continues to pose threats and uncertainties in national as well as global sustainable development prospects. "Young people have a significant role to play in this crusade as feature leaders and so, need to be environmentally conscious," he pointed.
Dem further revealed that preparation for the program is in high gear but quick to add that the support of other institutions is necessary for the effective conduct of the programme, as well as to the general efforts of the association. He therefore called on institutions and concerned individuals to support this noble crusade.
